Surveyed in 1772, it is believed that this
road was the preferred alternative to the Forbes Road for pioneers planning to
settle in Ohio and other western destinations.
This 68-mile stretch of roadway in the Laurel Highlands
is a favorite to many as it provides breathtaking scenery and easy access to several
historic, natural and cultural sites.
PO Box 582 Ligonier,
PA 15658 724-238-9030 The Lincoln Highway, stretching from New
York City to San Francisco, is the nation's first coast-to-coast highway. In Pennsylvania,
it is known for the most part as Route 30. Initiated in 1913, the Lincoln
Highway sparked popular imagination and fostered the growth of automobile tourism.
The Highway represents nearly three centuries of Pennsylvania transportation history.
Today, there is a renewed interest in the old Lincoln - in its "mom-and-pop"
gas stations, diners, tourist cabins, scenic vistas, historic attractions, antique
shops, Main Street communities, and recreation.
Painted by Pennsylvania artists and located next to
interpretive exhibits, the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor has created an informative
and fanciful 200-mile Roadside Museum that includes 23 vintage gas pumps! Each
7-foot-tall fiberglass pump is a unique work of art, and serves as a reminder
of days gone by when service attendants rushed out to pump gas and clean your
windshield at full-service "mom and pop" gas stations.
